Kym Frame

Kym Frame is a Brisbane based artist specialising in Sculpture and Installation, she is currently exploring the possibilities of handmade paper, and her arts practice is largely inspired by the stories and lived experiences of women, human connection and the environment.
Her latest work “Gather” explores positivity and the personal and community benefits of surrounding ourselves with those who lift us up. Those who remind us of our strength and our worth. Using natural handmade paper that is fragile yet strong is a fitting metaphor for the combination of vulnerability and resilience Kym sees and admires in women.

The complex and variegated layers in the paper as well as the layering process involved in creating the work, also reflects what it is to be female. Honesty, stillness and light are all important aspects of her work.

Kym’s process involves developing a question on a specific theme, and sending it in the mail to between 100 and 200 women who generously respond. Their responses are returned anonymously in a prepaid envelope provided. They are then incorporated in the work as a major component. The women participating in the project come from a broad range of backgrounds and greatly vary in age, speaking to the diversity of women and their experiences in Contemporary Australia.

Gather is inspired by women’s stories of belonging and connection. It acknowledges the body, showing its vulnerability but also its power when nurtured by voices that lift and sustain it.
The form is sculpted from banana fibre. The artist states: I enjoy working with handmade paper for its layered and translucent qualities. It is both surface and depth. Strength and fragility, light and dark. These qualities provide rich echoes for my sculptural exploration of women’s variegated lives. I have
come to understand that embodying honesty, stillness and connection in my work is important to me.
