When I arrive at my studio in Seoul, I brew coffee, grind ink, and gather my thoughts. Reflecting on my journey, I remember my early fascination with history and maps as a student. I began copying maps in detail, which led to my solo exhibition „Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…and Spring Again…“ in 2006. For over a decade, I have explored ancient maps, deepening my understanding of their significance.
Maps evolve over time; from Kim Jong-ho’s hand-painted maps to today’s 3D representations like Google Maps. They serve as living history, encapsulating the past, present, and future of society and culture. I incorporate traditional materials and everyday objects in my work, such as calendars and cloth, weaving them into three-dimensional images to connect time and space.
My 2019 exhibition, „Spring Letter of History,“ expressed the continuity of history. Since 2014, I’ve served as a docent at the Leeum Museum of Art, with a standout moment in 2016 at the „Celebration of Korean Architecture“ exhibition, where I admired a 5-meter artwork, sparking my desire to recreate the essence of Chosun in my own works. My journey continues, fueled by meticulous research and passion for this theme.
