Jooyun Lim, originally from Seoul, Korea, moved to Australia a decade ago after
completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramic Arts. Inspired by the tranquillity of rural Queensland, Australia, she finds motivation in the natural surroundings, away from the competitiveness of her homeland.

As a migrant in Australia, she uses her work to share her personal thoughts and experiences.
The themes of her work included cultural diversity, the full range of human emotions, and the natural world.
The exhibition‘ FOREST‘ at Cascade Art Concept has been inspired by her daily life in a rural town in Queensland, Standthorpe, where she encounters tranquillity but is occasionally challenged as a stranger within her own environment. This emotional and psychological challenge has been transformed into her new installation at the gallery.

“Every step away from home is a new challenge, and the challenge starts with leaving your
own comfort zone. And it is terrifying. Nevertheless, during your journey, you will encounter an indescribable nature that surrounds us. Unexpectedly, you will find comfort from. “I wanted to show my deep appreciation to nature, which consoled me, took me to a different universe, showing me I am merely existing…As a migrant, every moment was a challenge. In daily life, surrounded by the new language, in a new environment, with new people, the food, the air, the wind – everything is different.
“The aim of this project delves into the intricate relationship between individuals and their
environment. Through a series of ceramic works, I aim to explore the dynamics between self-identity and one’s surroundings. “

She uses hand-built or wheel-throw, slip-cast to make the body and carving or
Inlaying to add details, and using glass in various arrangements, she also fires her sculptural work. She garnered recognition for her work, including winning prizes at the Brunswick
Street Gallery Small Works Art Prize 2024 and local art competitions in QLD have
been a finalist and exhibited in statewide art awards, including Queensland
Regional Art Awards, as well as holding 2 solo exhibitions in VIC.
